I've been on this forum a lot lately, and I'd like to get to know everyone that frequents it. So I was wondering if everyone could post their age, a bit of their background, and their favorite style of writing.

I'm 17, I've been playing guitar for 6 years, and writing lyrics (poems) for about 2. I like writing poems that get me down, though I'm a pretty cheerful person.

I'm 33, and I like to write in all sorts of different styles. Having said that, I'm not a fan of confessional poetry and I don't like poetry to be too simple. Er, that's all.

I am also 33 and I've been writing poetry since I was a child. I write mainly as a release. I get bored with one set style so I experiment with things and see where it leads me. It also depends on my emotions and my mood at the time I am writing.
  • Im 27. I write pretty simple stuff and for the most part I write about what I have/am experiencing. I do not put more than about 5 minutes into a poem, which I suppose is why they are so simple. for me, I right to vent mostly. I also am righting/working on 3 comics (1 of which we have had an actual offer from vertigo on), and am trying to write a book, though that is really hard, so I will probably give up.

  • Well, I'm 12. I'm into music. I play the drums, and saxophone, and wish I could sing. I also like to write music. I can at times be either very smart, very stupid. It usually differs. Like, in Math I just got 58 percent on my test..but in music I got an A+ for the month....mostly I'm nice to people, and try to be. But, usually when I try to be nice, everybody's a jerk. Oh well...I'm also very new to this forum. I just started last night, but I had been cruisin' on it for several nights before. I was just too lazy to sign up though. But, hello.

  • 22-former creative writing major, my poems don't vary in style too much, mostly quartets 4-7 stanzas per poem, the subjects and the mood vary though

I also share a slight loathing for confessional poetry, but what do I know really memoir as much as I hate it, is all the rage these days. I also think that the poets have all been eclipsed by the mindless drivel of most modern music lyrics

I'm 24 and I have no style :) My poems are probably the ones that everyone finds irritating. I mostly started writing when I was 15 just as a way of getting my feelings out (I'm not a very open person usually, not even to family/friends). It really helped, so I kept on going, not always about me but also anything that came to my mind and held my interest. I would say most of my stuff is too boring/personal/irrelvant or badly written for many people to be interested in it, but it's not really for other people. And although I share it on here sometimes, that is really a selfish thing I guess. I don't think it is going to improve anyone's life in anyway, just getting it off my chest or trying to make conversation with strangers for no apparent reason.

but I enjoy writing in this place.

PS. Does any one want to have a little fun and reply to my selfportrait thread in the art wall? I would find it interesting to see either what you look like or how you see yourself. No talent required (I mean look at mine). Just a bit of fun. The thread has had 17 views and no responses. Maybe art people take themselves too seriously. Hope to see you all join in my little fun game.
  • well Ali, regarding "I have a crush on one of the members of pearl Jam..but then again...who doesnt?" I like their music and all, but cmon....lol....but hey, if I was gay, I know who Id pick...JK

Pacifier, I viewed your thread, and hope to do it when I have some extra time (and a pencil and paper). I have absolutely no artistic talent (I have a hard time drawing a line with a ruler.....not sarcasm!), but I shall try. But hey, with my low self esteem, how could this hurt! Im in

Hi Kovo, welcome......I'm 39, and work at home online as an editor of documents mostly written in English by chinese people.....I'm a single mother......I'm Irish, but live here in beautiful Australia.....I guess my favourite two poets are Bob Dylan and Shakespeare.......I really enjoy writing poems, even if they're considered to be bad, I'm not ashamed of them, on the other hand, I don't think they're going to win any awards....hehehehe.....;) I'm quite headstrong and sincere, and need to shut-up sometimes....hehehehee....but I'm happy with myself and happy with my life, so why mess with the recipe......I love reading the work of the talented people on here, and it's a real haven sometimes when the other parts of the forum get too stormy :) but I like to be honest with my reactions to stuff, even though I might not be a proper critic, if I love it, I say so, and if I don't I say so, or just don't comment.....
....they're asking me to prove why I should be allowed to stay with my baby in Australia, because I'm mentally ill......and they think I should leave......
  • I'm 17. I write lyrics and music mostly as of late. I have a couple bands, one being The Lounge act. The other currently just under my own name Mark David. With my lyrics I tend to fallow a general theme of whatever the rest of the album is. with the lounge act its more lyrical, with my solo stuff more of a sonic vibe. I dabble in poetry in my down time. My favoret lyricists are probibly Bob Dylan, and nick drake, randy newman, lou reed, jessica simpson, frank black, billy corgan, and mike patton.
  • I'm 27. I'm spending a lot of my writing time attempting to form a unique voice--and convey human experience. I no longer harbor secret dreams of being a famous poet; it's just something I love to do with my time.

I'm a manager in the foodservice industry.

You'll usually find me outside, just walking around, smelling things and paying attention to the sounds.

Film is a major pasttime for me as well.

  • ..I'm 15 years old...Besides school I write and I draw..At least I try to..:)..I don't dare to show it to other people so I don't know if I will do something with it in the future...(I hope I will..)
I get my inspiration from the bands I listen..And also just the things I see around me..A real dreamer; Seeing things that aren't there or make it more beautiful or the opposite...I'm proud of that:)

Thanks everyone for replying, hopefully more people do too. @ ISN and sevensins. Bob's son Jakob also writes great lyrics, just wanted to point that out (Really into the wallflowers in the past few weeks) :D.

  • I used to write alot in my adolescent years. Since being in such a boring place. Life seems to slip by without a word. Now I write crap that I hate. Can't think like I used to. Might have been all the....nevermind. I enjoy reading everyone's work though.

  • Hi...

I'm 34... I've written 60 or so songs, about 3 of which are worth anything. I respect subtlety in writing and have the hardest time getting there myself. I need to put more effort into my own work, but am totally scatterbrained when I sit down to write.

I like reading everyone's work even if I don't post a reply. Keep up the work!

  • kovo, you have an exceptional amount of emotion and *lived life* feeling for 17. i'm amazed.

    i'm 38, not a writer...
i like to come here to read, especially when i see someone putting *my* feelings into words, its incredible. i don't get to reply to all that i'd like to, but i do enjoy reading everything here. everyone seems to have their own special style.

sometimes a moment will overwhelm me emotionally and i'll jot something down here, but it always lacks in a big way... it does help though.

Thanks violet, you put a smile on my face. And @ Depopulation, ever heard Invisible City? Great song.

  • Im 22, and Ive been writing for about 4 years. I used to just write for myself, never showed anyone, didnt even tell anyone that I like to write. I usually write confessional pieces with a twist. I like to add humour to anything I write, or shock and awe. My views and opinions usually differ from the norm.

I like reading what everyone writes. There are some on here, that are just too much real poetry, to complex for me to comprehend. Still enjoy it though.

I'm 37, going through a mid-life crisis that should end Thursday because that's the last Pearl Jam concert I will be attending until they come to this neck of the woods. My favorite poetry is haiku. I like this poetry forum. I think it's a very nice place and I definitely don't respond to as much as I read. As others have mentioned it's a time issue. When I write poetry I know that there's more to life than 24 hours a day.

  • hello, I'm 27. The thing i like most about it is the interesting people, i also love the format of the whole structure.... it is like a river that has a source but has not yet reached its ocean.... or like a centipede that just doesn't feel it has enough legs. it's a stream of creativity without any kind of censorship or hierachy. And it's a little like a soap opera, you can go away for a few days and revisit, catch up, find out what's going on. A very good soap though!!

  • Hi there! :) I'm 30 and I've been writing on and off since I was a kid. Sometimes I write to release, sometimes I'm inspired by events or other people, places, things. I have no distinct style, I just write for the sake of writing because it's what I like to do and it makes me feel good. My only hope is that some of what I share hits home with some other folks.

I enjoy and support creativity in all shapes and sizes because to me, it is true freedom of expression. I come here to read and post because it makes me FEEL whilst I'm at work and in a mostly numb-like state. I like to see people sharing and caring and pouring their hearts out! A big bonus is that I've also made some good friends as a result of posting here and so, this place has become special to me. :)

I don't get the chance to read or respond to as many posts as I'd like to but I think everyone tries their best and I certainly appreciate that. :)

  • i'm 21, and i enjoy all writing. I'm not a "by the book" writer, i've never really studied poetry aside from 3 weeks in my english class junior year of high school. I dont think writing needs a format, there is no right or wrong. I mostly write the ones that a few of you despise also, i write what i feel. Sometimes though i do write a non-biographical poem though, when i see/hear something interesting. What i do write, i write right here, on the board, no edits, not too much thinking. I just get it out, for better or for worse. Thanks for reading my stuff, because although i write for myself, it means a lot to know someone else reads it too.

    take care.
