The Gap

My choice and my pride pushed you aside,
And my rights and my wrongs, dragged you along.

Standing up for the right, and a step forward for the good
Shouldn't be a step away from you, I never knew it would.
If I surrendered with my hands up towards the sky,
I'd never be able to wipe the tears that plague your eyes.

I never knew I'd turn my back on you
It's not something I meant to do.
It's how things worked out, or couldn't.
I miss you though I know I shouldn't.

I'm sorry for the gap between us,
I'm sorry for the pain that you must
Feel, it's real, and I'm sorry.
I'm sorry I had to go out with both guns in hand
And I'm sorry that things did not work out as we planned
But I've lost better friends for lesser reasons
And I'm not about to forgive treason.
I shouldn't have to fight a battle I'll never win, just to lose those I've never had.

A treacherous mind is yours to bear
so trade all hopes for some despair
A darkened path shall guide your way
the way home, for a dog astray
