I Knew and Remember

I knew a man with honor
With nowhere to run.
He chose to fight,
But he threw down his gun.

I knew a man with it all.
All but what mattered.
He pushed her away,
It left that man shattered.

I knew a girl once,
My reason to be.
I turned my back, but...
She meant the world to me.

I knew the face of my friends,
The hands that they shared,
The reasons I stayed,
Through the years that I cared.

I knew the wisest of men,
His wisdom I heard.
But I remember this line,
I remember each word.

It's better to have memories of what you've lost, then to lose memories of what you've had.
I shouldn't have to fight a battle I'll never win, just to lose those I've never had.
