Listen to the Band I'm In

Hey...I was just wondering if I could get some feedback of this first song the band I'm in has recorded. Our name is Charlie Chaplin's Dream Pony lol. Anyways...here's a link, http://www.purevolume.com/charliechaplinsdreampony , positive and negative feedback is requested. Thanks...and I hope to get some news back from some people.

The guitar is very repetitive, and I can't stand the sound of the heavy guitar (no idea what kind of pedal your using). I think is okay though...Its definately got potential.

  • Hah...thanks...yea I forgot to mention that we recorded it with my computer...so the quality is shit...the vocals were recorded with a computer mic...so they sound really bad. I really do appreciate feedback...this is our first song, and all of our reaction has been the same...guitar is very repetitive. We're complete n00bs when it comes to recording and such...so do you have any ideas or anything? Oh, and how much does an actual studio cost...sorry for being so ignorant...this is just my first band and all I do is write lyrics and sing. Oh, also, because of the repetitivity, do you think we should add another riff...if so...where do you think we should add it. I know I'm asking a lot of questions I'm just interested in hearing how to better the quality of our band to not be mediocre. Again, thanks for the input, it's nice to hear from someone who's honest and who's not just lying.

Studio's are quite expensive. The one we have (http://www.theretroman.com) the board alone is over 4000 (I own nothing of the studio exipment) I just play in the band. I am definately no expert, and in the same boat as you....trying to make it in this cutthroat industry. The best advice I can give you is to just keep at it, that and listen to as many different types of music as you can. If you have alot of different influences your diversity should increase enourmously. Just never stop playing...and let nobody dictate your passion for the music.

I think it is pretty good for a first song. I agree that the guitar is too repitive...there seems to be no change from verse to chorus.

I know it is temporary but the band name is horrible.
    "We're fixed good, lamp-wise."
  • The reason there is no transition is because there is no chorus. It's more of a ballad type thing...the song we're working on now has a chorus and is much more fast...it also is a bit more complex...a decent amount of riffs...I think around 8 or so...we're still trying to get the feel for things...but I think it's working out pretty well. We all get along and that's one of the biggest things that helps it work. The reason that first song has no chorus is because I just used a poem I wrote as lyrics...and I couldn't find a place for a chorus...just cause in my opinion it told a story. Anyways...thanks for the critisism...it's always good to hear how you can better yourself.

i also know the hardship of shitty recording equitment. but if u can get ur hands on something like Acid pro, u can mix and master ur recordings to up the quality a little. but i do like this song, if you back off the fuzz distortion and do what u say you did to its chourus you might really have something there. all in all, solid song.

    cool, i'm 16 too btw
  • Anticreed, I really liked Cosmo's Funeral, it had a nice feel to it, the only problem I found was the drums annoyed the crap out of me...they were too repetitive lol.

Sevensins, I really like your stuff, your voice kinda reminds me of Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes)...but not your music style. I like the dark atmosphere of it all lol.

Oh, can you guys tell me what you thought of the vocals...the quality is shit, but do you think they sounded good? I don't want be one of those bands that people are like...the music was great but the vocals sucked.

i like the vocals, reminds me of the singer from live. The vocals at the begining could use a different aprotch. There good, its just they dont fit the mood of the song in my opinion. but thats just me. Do u have any other songs recorded?
  • Nope not yet...on tuesday we will hopefully be recording our second song...it's much heavier than the last one, and much more complex. It's also a heck of a lot more fun to sing IMO lol. I'll be putting that up there as soon as possible.

"Charlies Chaplins Dream Pony"....Thats def. good thats only a temp. name, its not even a good temp. name though, Charlie Chaplin isnt even a good stage name....How about "Charlie and The Organ Donor's Society"....wait why am i giving out ideas for band names when i dont even have a good band name....lol, anyways more importantly than the name is the music, which is what i will judge the band on, not the name.

The first track i listened to was "Fade"...It sounds pretty good recorded, but i thought the electric guitar needs a lil better tone, it sounded like muddy blues distortion, which didnt seem to go well with the clean guitar. The clean guitar sounded very nice and overall its a very good song, it has a nice relaxing feel to it. The singers voice is unique, and he has a folk stlye of singing which almost reminds me of my own, and the lyrics seemed sincere. So anyways i think this is a very good song, and you guys have alot of potential, i only listened to one song, because there was only one, so whenever you guys put anything new up let us know. later

"Charlies Chaplins Dream Pony"....Thats def. good thats only a temp. name, its not even a good temp. name though" -- oh, no, no, no I have to disagree, and I have this story to prove that Charlie Chaplin's Dream Pony is absolutely a good name.

I'm going to have to admit to knowing zero about what makes good music, so I didn't listen to the song (sorry), but the name of the band is really great. I love it.

and have I got a cool picture to tell you about . . . I mean it's perfect, so if you ever get rich and famous you can buy the rights, I'm sure

It's by this guy David Mann, who was an artist for years for Easyriders, motorcycle mag. (motorcycles are called steel ponies -- just in case you haven't heard that expression) -- so there is the pony tie in

Now for the dream, David was influenced, believe it or not by Renee Magritte, the surrealist with the thing for the bowler hats (so there's the dream tie in), so he did a picture of Charlie Chaplin standing on a deck of cards as a sort of ode to Magritte.

Now when you're rich and famous, you can tell people that story about your band's name (if you like)
