i've had an idea floating around in my head the last couple of days; i've written a few of lines down...and i'm thinking it has the makings of fairly decent "protest" lyrics.
anyway, got to thinking of the protest songs that have come down the pike over the years. for me, Pearl Jam's Insignificance comes across as the most meaningful song of theirs in the protest genre; it also occurs to me that two songs that Pearl Jam cover are also, possibly, two of the better protest songs ever written. Dylan's Masters of War and The Clash's Know Your Rights.
Ultimately, though, I don't know that anyone has come close to writing one better than Mellencamps Pink Houses. Nothing addresses the American State of the Union better than that song, to me. It's still significant.
So, take the challenge. Submit a protest song!
