White Van

I saw a guy treading desperately against the traffic between lanes
Holding his mouth with a bloody, soiled cloth
Cars slowing to catch a glimpse
Of what he had become
I know he had a childhood
And he had a mother who nursed him
And gave him life
Along the way something turned
And the desperate blinking of his eyes
Didn't match the shuffling of his broken feet
Inside the mind under the haze were
Memories of a bright future
That were lost on the road somewhere
I gave my wife away one night
I gave her to a man in a white van
At an airport
I didn't see her eyes because she was putting her bag away
I couldn't kiss her for the last time because it was rush hour
And as I slumped away without looking back
I touched her wedding ring through my pocket
Against my leg
And I realized that the man I gave her to never deserved her
Like I did
The man who found her on the sand at the beach
Never reached over to her pillow like I used to
To check for warmth just so he could close his eyes
The man who recycled her yet again
Never felt the pain of the little girl that I inherited
Never figured out that love shines through eyes clouded with pain and fear
But you have to know it's there
Never shared the glow of a good day among bad
Never created life and death with her on the same day
Never felt alive and dead
And empty and bloated
Encouraged and Hopeless
Horrified and grateful
All at once
He never put in the time
That I put in
Only to hear from someone through the crackling of a cell phone
That the dream she begged me to share
Was ripped away again
Because the chapter had ended
Not because there were no more words
But because there were no more pages
Holding his mouth with a bloody, soiled cloth
Cars slowing to catch a glimpse
Of what he had become
I know he had a childhood
And he had a mother who nursed him
And gave him life
Along the way something turned
