CONFIRMATION OF VERBAL INSTRUCTIONS RECEIVED

No further works to be carried out within master en-suite and coach house until further notice. Areas to be locked off.

Two gables set in Georgian pose,
with six over six sash windows,
painted with pointing not too bright,
proportioned by a circle or by sight.

An old coach house in brick and rubble,
with bats in tow to cause a kerfuffle,
Goldsmith came to restore calm,
he held English Nature in his palm.

He sat by the lake on a clear bright night,
'Perfect conditions to see them in flight',
a sonic recorder heard them cry,
a flashlit shot brought them out of the sky.

And so the little mammals have found a new home,
one to share with a human so they're never alone.

  • I like the tension in this poem between measured form and allusive, indirect imagery. The only immediate suggestion I have to make is that line six should end with the word "kerfuffle".
