salt water, she had said, heals everything
so I go down the dune past rustling sea oats and broken shells
into that bruise-colored tide
thick with clots of seaweed and jellyfish
churned up by an offshore storm
I wade out slowly into the slapping surf
tough love I think, for there is no gentle touch
or soothing motion--just tumbling, tumbling ocean
and those wounds on my shins--carved there by carelessness
sting of salt and sand until my mouth
becomes a thin blue vein against the sky
but I know that when the sun comes out
these cuts will close up and fade away
and I will be alright, I will be alright
just as she said I would
