The problem that I have with religion and atheism, when I think about it, is a matter of faith. Both sides have an utter and absolute belief in their position: religion that there is a god and atheism that there is not. I feel that both positions are closed minded. Agnosticism on the other hand is open. If there is a higher power then it might be nothing like any of the monotheistic religions or any religion have or can imagine. The truth(s) could be so far beyond the scope of human intellect that we would cease to exist if we found the answer. I say truth(s) because religion has a fascination with oneness. One way to get in, anything else and you’re going down below. Atheist’s feel that they have a superior view of the world because they don’t have faith. To me they have simply shifted they faith in god toward science. Now while science has provided a lot of benefit toward the human race an absolute belief in anything is dangerous. An absolute belief is rigid. It traps us in a single frame of thought where by all progress is stagnate. What we should have faith in is each other, the human race. The world is falling apart we need to pick up the pieces together.

Another problem I have with religion is that its base mode of operation is fear. It plays on the fear of death. No one truly knows what happens after we die. Religion comes in and paints a picture of fire and brimstone if you do not follow us. We have the answers we can keep you safe. All that we ask is that you do not question and give us money. Lots of it.

Religion is not necessary to be a moral person. If upon my death you Christians are actually right and someone comes to block my entrance to the pearly gates should I be turned away? I have lived a moral life, if Christians are right then it was you god who created me with this brain that screams NO. It was you who gave me the power to reason. Should I be punished for thinking? You showed me nothing how was I to believe. You say religion(faith) can move mountains but science really has.

Religious people often say well I will accept the big bang but something divine MUST have started it. We as a species demand logical thinking. Cause and effect. Something can’t just happen right. We need to realize that perhaps the truth(s) are beyond our understanding. The scientific method has actually fueled this belief and has worked in favor of religion because science is also cause and effect. The truth(s) could be so far beyond our understanding of the universe we find ourselves in.

We have a lot of labels in this society. Religion is just another one. Another way to differentiate me from you when in fact we are the same. It creates tension and divides cultures from one another. It like all these political pundits: O’Reilly, Franken, and all the others. They make a living by dividing when we should be coming together to work toward progress. Nothing is getting done.

Once we get past the singularity the paths are infinite. This is true hope. Anything is possible.
I am a nothing dreaming of something unknown.
