I Long to Hold Some Lady

-

I long to hold some lady
For my love is far away,
And will not come tomorrow
And was not here today.

There is no flesh so perfect
As on my lady's bone,
And yet it seems so distant
When I am all alone:

As though she were a masterpiece
In some castled town,
That pilgrims come to visit
And priests to copy down.

Alas, I cannot travel
To a love I have so deep
Or sleep too close beside
A love I want to keep.

But I long to hold some lady,
For flesh is warm and sweet.
Cold skeletons go marching
Each night beside my feet.

- I was able to see him live 2 nights at the Rebecca Cohen here in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was pretty emotional! Would see him again in a heart beat!

    I love Leonard Cohen!

    If you want a lover
Ill do anything you ask me to
And if you want another kind of love
Ill wear a mask for you
    If you want a partner
    Take my hand
Or if you want to strike me down in anger
    Here I stand
    Im your man

    If you want a boxer
I will step into the ring for you
And if you want a doctor
Ill examine every inch of you
    If you want a driver
    Climb inside
Or if you want to take me for a ride
    You know you can
    Im your man

    Ah, the moons too bright
    The chains too tight
The beast wont go to sleep
Ive been running through these promises to you
That I made and I could not keep
Ah but a man never got a woman back
Not by begging on his knees
Or Id crawl to you baby
And Id fall at your feet
And Id howl at your beauty
    Like a dog in heat
And Id claw at your heart
And Id tear at your sheet
    Id say please, please
    Im your man

And if youve got to sleep
    A moment on the road
    I will steer for you
And if you want to work the street alone
    Ill disappear for you
If you want a father for your child
Or only want to walk with me a while
    Across the sand
    Im your man

    If you want a lover
Ill do anything you ask me to
And if you want another kind of love
Ill wear a mask for you
    Feels Good Inc.

I meant to say that this poem was a song called "I'm Your Man" by Leonard Cohen. It was featured in the Maggie Gyllenhaal/James Spader film "The Secretary".

Lately, i've been playing his Essentials double CD set in my car. Memories of day's of lost & love. Alway's get to me.

The man is over 70 year's old, and his vocals/singing still sounds as good as when he was 20. He was 'built with a golden voice!'

I love his Book of Longing. Bought his Stranger Music book at the show that night. It was unforgetable.

Then you might know the song of his about war that I heard while watching a stupid ass movie with Gary Oldman in it?

  • I have had the chance to meet Mr. Leonard Cohen. It was at a fundraiser (for what exactly, I cannot recall) a few years back. We talked for a while, mostly about his music... a little bit about me. I made a few suggestions to him, concerning his songwriting. I believe I've heard traces of my advice in his newer music, what he's released since we met.

Overall, I'd say Cohen is a good, but not great, songwriter.
