  • Some will tell you to travel, others will tell you to fall in love and get hurt, others will tell to read other people's books. You know what I'd say you should do? Well, this might sound silly but I would start playing on the guitar or whatever instrument you play, or put on a record, and start making sounds with your mouth. Aaaaayyyy eeeeeee iiiiiiiii oooooooo uuuuuuuuuuu sounds. Then string a melody together with the sounds. Then think, what kinds of emotions or colours do these sounds suggest, strung together like that? Are there any words that sound like this improvised mush? Then start putting words in here and there.

Don't worry about whether nothing makes "sense" yet. After a while words will appear here and there from line to line, and you'll start thinking, hmmm, is there any association between these words? Then you'll start fleshing out the lines with images either from your unconscious or in a realized narrative. That might sound like a bonkers way of writing a song but it has worked for me in the past.

I've listened to Pearl Jam and been inspired by the music to think of other images. I write poetry "Inspired by Pearl Jam . . ."that may or may not look like the original lyric (I hope it doesn't because that's a no-no.) I think the threads on this forum are purged pretty quickly because I don't see any of my poetry inspired by Pearl Jam here, or else I would give you an example. For instance, with "Alone" i thought up a vietnam war widow finally letting go of her marriage from decades ago. So, if you like to listen to Pearl Jam listen to the music while looking at photographs, or art or something else so you have two sources of inspiration.
