I heard the news
come down from London
that the clocks stopped today.
For a few boys the match was over,
A good innings, and tea
later for the parents.
The old boys will show off
their medals too -
they understand,
if they haven't quite learned.
Grin through the dust
that settles now
on your brow,
and leave a fresh face
for the papers.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"
