I heard you were wintering in Russia,
a month alone on the Neva.
I planned to join you once, if you remember,
(It was a pilgrimage of sorts,
you know how I loved those writers)
but no matter.
I think I'll trace your steps later,
when you are gone, maybe in the spring,
when the trees are colouring,
and the snow has thawed an inch or so.
The white is so damned vast,
it makes my head spin.
I'll go to the Winter Palace
and try to guess your route -
(Canova, Gauguin, Rodin?)
And I shall feel you with me,
that is better than nothing.

"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"

Looks wonderful.
Ekaterinburg did them in, though. :(
