Just to get by

Just enough to get by is not enough
to calm me,
or sit me down with folded arms
and just sigh
about everything I never saw happen
rather than play at being tough
or damn it all and cry
over everything I never imagined
would happen or that which I did
and never came just to spite me
or caught me off guard to fright me
or other bastard cruelties
I suffered just to get by
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"
