..two steps back

Peering out from under the leaden weight
of the cross I bear
stumbling, whispering from my
quivering lips, cracking and dry,
I feel the burden in my gut
like an ache, contorting my insides
in some perverted kind of peristalsis.
and I trudge onwards,
forever trudging towards my golgotha
and the best bit? I don't know why, I'll never know why,
but I know the burden will never lift.
I'll keep trudging, legs bent, doubled
and slipping down, further and further down the hill,
one step forwards and two steps back
of the cross I bear
stumbling, whispering from my
quivering lips, cracking and dry,
I feel the burden in my gut
like an ache, contorting my insides
in some perverted kind of peristalsis.
and I trudge onwards,
forever trudging towards my golgotha
and the best bit? I don't know why, I'll never know why,
but I know the burden will never lift.
I'll keep trudging, legs bent, doubled
and slipping down, further and further down the hill,
one step forwards and two steps back
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"
