Where have you been?

"Where have you been?"

I'm beside a road
Lost. Right.
Climb out of the field
look left and right
There is no traffic
and little daylight.
Is it getting dark
or getting bright.

My clothes are wet
My hair is dry
It's warm
It must be midsummer
I have pains
behind my eyes
What happened
I just can't recall

I could wait for sunrise
but it hurts to stand still
I'm feeling sickly and
don't know where to begin.
Nothing looks familiar
I need to take flight
But for now I'm stuck here
Pondering left or right.

At work, I'll explain this one later.

The simplest view of this poem is the old line, how do you know where you're
going if you don't know where you've been. I match that feeling of being lost
in a life with no direction (which plagues me these days) with the waking up
with a sore head and not recalling the previous night.

All in all my life is just one long hangover.

    What do you think?

  • I know quite a few people who are feeling like this these days. We're all around the same age and just feel like we don't have direction, we don't really know what we want to do, just that what we're doing is NOT it--like we're not really, fully living to our full potential. However, we're just not sure how to change that. Some of us have gone to university, some of us not. Some of us have decent paying jobs, some of us don't. Most of us hate our jobs. But all in all, there's just this general feeling of unrest, of needing to "take flight" somewhere, anywhere, just to see if we can find our true calling.

I really liked your poem! :) Thanks for putting into words what many of us are feeling. All I can say is that you can't give up and you can never lose hope!!!! :) Just keep plugging away and trying your best.

Some of us have gone to university check
Some of us have decent paying jobs check
Most of us hate our jobs. check

I'll never understand why but it somehow reassuring to know that we're
    not alone with these feelings/sentiments.

Thanks for the feedback, it's that little bit more encouragement to "keep plugging away".

    Cheers.

:) We're usually not as alone as we think and feel we are. :)

A hearty cheers to you too! :)

Every time I hear someone say cheers, I feel like drinking some beers
    to the bar! :D
