He Lived a Quick Life

He would hold a stick
twice his length
in his mouth and prance
like a gazelle
over backyard tennis balls.

He liked chocolate chip cookie dough dropped on the floor.

And one time I took him for a walk,
but I felt resistance
against the leash in my hand.
When I gave him some slack
he almost bolted back
to his family.
I did not feel slighted,
and I told them about his loyalty,
as I rubbed his tummy.

It's not a gamble against a car.

The scent of the sidewalk flowers
so strong it's toxic.
I did not know the metro escalator steps
had so many lines to look at
near my feet.
I walk this slowly when I'm sick.
