When Bella was born Eva whispered codes
close to her face of multiple arranged shapes
to keep Bella safe. As any mother would,
Eva spoke in terms newborns understood.

Years later Bella enters a thread shop
to break grey day boredom with needlepoint.
She pays for a canvas from the sale rack,
a simple pattern of multiple shapes.

She chooses colors that offer comfort;
deep greens for basil leaves, burnt red for clay,
and browns for gianduja ingredients.
Bella arranges the shapes from instinct.

The finished needlepoint hangs behind glass
safe from dust - safety added to her life.
