Every night, I drive the same road home.
On a small hill, there is always a presence.
The shadows conceal my mysterious companion.
On this hill, I am never alone.

The path is bare, my journey unknown.
Except on the hill, where this creature roams.
I stop and look, hear rustling of leaves.
I feel a stare, which I cannot hone.

I see its shape on these nights.
A man, a beast, a deer, a car.
It changes and changes, ever stilling my heart.
It may desist movement to let me know,
on this path, I am never my own.

My mind in tatters, my fears quiver.
As prey, it is difficult to form a thought.
These watchful eyes from beyond my own,
staring and plotting from shadows thrown.
Chasing a trail of smoke and reason.

  • I like this third version best of the three I've seen. Thank you for this. I like the disjointing effect of the staccato one line sentences and the sense of uncanniness in the subject matter.
