happy birthday, you made it

so its my birthday tomorrow, and i was just thinkin about it and....

A nineteen year old boy awoke on his twentieth birthday
To a red balloon tied to the arm of the chair
That looked over him while he slept
Strategically placed to block the sun light
Aimed directly at his face since he no longer sleeps facing the wall
Well at least not since he was twenty
Even though the transaction doesn’t really take place till he awakes
On the cushion rest a card sealed in an envelope, when opened it read
“Happy Birthday, you made it!” signed with a dash and a K
As he read it over and over he tried to remember why he put it there
Maybe just to cover himself in case no one else cared to share a word
But he knew how shallow words can be
Especially since he’s done so much without them

...thank you.

Kevin
While passing judgment on his life and accomplishments
He was interrupted by a door swing and the birth of praise
“It’s not like I did anything ya know” he said
Answered with a rebuttal of “Better than doing nothing”
He played his role that day even letting a smile or two slip out
The birthday cake cut through the dark to the rhythm of chant
Being asked to wish his wish he realized he wasn’t prepared
Looking around he wished the company would never change
He cried for the first time in years that night
And the next day resumed as if nothing had happened.
