summer

summer has a feeling
an air of bustling buzzers
and a flirting flying skirting crying lack of shame
it has a smiling wandering whiling away industry's game
you want to catch a lizard
or a dragonfly
and watch fish swimming round your feet
you don't get upset
when you find bubblegum under your seat
and you hear a constant droning
and the air wraps you up tight
you love to love
and you love to fight about love
and to drink lazily on the verandah
or the porch
and you wonder who's going to torch
troy again
or who's going to burn
lourdes with holy water
and you know that beer is free
and so it oughter

you smell dog pee
in the park
and then the rain falls....
and you remember all your summers
how hot and hasty you were
rushing through them
and calling all men 'friend'
and then the summer ends
but it's always summer
in my head
vancouver, india, and kent
I'm bent on making summer permanent....
I'm bent on burning, sweating, bird-watching
and fly-swatting
I love summer
I'm a total tourist
and winter's just a word
but that's absurd
they said with rage
turn the page
and bounce around
in snow and frost and get lost
in ice
I said 'that's nice'
but I want summer.....
....they're asking me to prove why I should be allowed to stay with my baby in Australia, because I'm mentally ill......and they think I should leave......

Incredible word choices and use of phonics, esp. in the first stanza. Great pacing and line breaking. A triumph!

  • When I was listing my favourite poets on here I made a glaring omission. ISN!

How about all those propelling present particles like busying beeswings?:

    "summer has a feeling
    an air of bustling buzzers
and a flirting flying skirting crying lack of shame
it has a smiling wandering whiling away industry's game"

That's so carnivalesque and alive! :)

And I love the colourful unexpectedness of the bubblegum in

"you want to catch a lizard
    or a dragonfly
and watch fish swimming round your feet
    you don't get upset
when you find bubblegum under your seat"

The word's so gorgeously disjointing in context, and doesn't it sound wonderful? Bubblegum. :)

And this bit is great: it's like a Kavanagh-esque, bit of born again romanticism that uses commonplace, anti-romantic language to find beauty and interior reverie from the most commonplace but ignored of natural imagery, dog pee in the park in the rain:

    "you smell dog pee
    in the park
    and then the rain falls....
and you remember all your summers
how hot and hasty you were
    rushing through them
    and calling all men 'friend'
    and then the summer ends
    but it's always summer
    in my head"

You go, girl! You're on a roll! :):):)

Fins, I'm so excited that you found some merit in it.....I kind of boil down all my life's experiences into my peotry, and it really feels right to me....thanks honey :)
