why do men stare at us?

men stare at us
what do they see?
do they see more than we are?
are we more than they see?
are we a pair of lips or eyes
or long brown hair?
are we angels in disguise?
why do men stare?

is the beauty of our souls apparent
in the line from cheek to brow?
are we glistening and radiant
and glowing?
is every man an artist
with an artist's eye and taste
why do men stare at us
and look away in haste....?

(I could add more lines - do you think it needs more lines?)
....they're asking me to prove why I should be allowed to stay with my baby in Australia, because I'm mentally ill......and they think I should leave......

  • Good question, ISN! :) I like how you ask if the beauty of our souls is apparent--that was excellent! It'd be nice to think that, that's at least part of the reason men stare. :D

This is a poem I could read over and over again, you know. I think it's good the way it is but I'm sure you could add more lines if you felt the need...although it's certainly not necessary. :)

thanks....Being.....I just watched Girl with a Pearl Earring.....and a kid was staring at me earlier up in town at the traffic lights - he was with his family, and I noticed him staring at me, I crossed the road cos there was no cars, and he just blindly crossed after me as though he was mesmerised, leaving his family behind and his younger brother shouting 'dangerous!!!'......I'm not as pretty as I used to be, but I guess the winter has put some colour in my cheeks or something......it amazes me the way men devour women's faces as though they were food for the starving......

  • I think that's good! It's up there with your mighty "Ring Tones" poem. :):):)

thanks Fins, I thought I might add some lines....but it seems okay, and what's the point - it's only fun....

I'm definitely an angel in disguise, an angel with an attitude at times, but nonetheless an angel in disguise. Actually, that's not true, I thought I was an angel for about 3 days until I read up on angels and proved myself wrong. That was disappointing. Nice poem :-)

  • :) You're welcome, my dear! I'm sure you're more beautiful than you give yourself credit for---inside and out! That's so cute how he was mezmerized by you. :) The last time some kids had a gander at me it was becasue they were staring at my purse--it's shaped as a bustier and is pretty well endowed for a purse! :D

it's an okay relaxing movie to watch about a Vermeer painting - the relationship between the painter and his maid, and other domestic issues - Scarlett Johanssen is in it, and although she's perfect for the part - she tends to over-act......but it was an okay movie......the painter is obsessed by her beauty......and I must admit, I don't think I'll ever watch the film again, but it made me think.....actually I'm always astounded by the amount of stares I get, especially from men with women with them.....that kind of makes me sick.....one of the reasons I guess I never married......men are so fickle...!!!! hehehehe
....they're asking me to prove why I should be allowed to stay with my baby in Australia, because I'm mentally ill......and they think I should leave......
  • Over-acting makes me wanna puke! :D Hee Hee! Maybe as they're looking, they're thinking about having their fickle pickle tickled!!!! :p:p;)

Sometimes it makes me feel good to have a look thrown my way, you know, when it's accompanied by a pleasant smile but when it's that up and down slimey stare that some men lay on ya, the one that makes you feel like you've been swimming in gasoline...that makes me sick! :(

Oh and thanks for the low down on the movie. :)

    i love woman
thanks to everyone who can read what i write without having to say something mean
  • when I look at a woman
I don't see first her beauty
or how can I bed her because it's her duty
    I look past her looks
    I don't imagine her naked
I want to see what's inside her
I want to know she's not faking it

When I look at a woman I want her to know
there is more to offer than what is shown
on the outside her looks can seem quite alluring
but it's what's inside her that is ever enduring
This is the best I could come up with.
  • That's really cool, and captures the essence of many questions that women have roaming in their minds. I can just picture a woman in a crowded room pondering these very thoughts...amidst the noise.

Fanatstic poem!! I'd leave it just as it is.

Why do we stare? I don't know. For me, the powerful majesty of being attracted to a woman comes from the fact that I never know why it is happening.

  • I was staring at this girl the other night
She was dancing, I was watching
How do girls move like that, its amazing
The rythym they have, I find so attractive
She stared back at me, but kept on dancing
I could think of so many things I wanted to do
So many things I could have said
But I was only brave enough to stare.

    I really liked your poem

jennifer had been raised to believe a man should be polite,
yet the stare of this mystery stranger shook her with delight,
it's jen's turn to dance among the stars,
    and so she wonders whistfully,
why a man in serch of love,
    sensuously battered,
as his previous love left saddened bitter scars,
thus he stares through her beauty with hope's loveliest longing,
    to be loved ..
    ahh,
    yes,
    and ..
    to love.
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

Thanks your endorphin rush, I'm amazed how all the response poems rhyme so well....this is a good one......

Thanks LeaderofMen, that about sums it up - the crazy deranged stare, which can make a girl vain, and also which is so primal in men.....

Thanks Travers....last night when I wrote the peom, it brought up all kinds of moral quandaries for me.....it's great that the men have so many different thoughts on it....

I guess love makes the world go round.....:)

I don't believe in Destiny and Fate, I put all my trust in God.....I guess you could say I'm disillusioned with people.....but love em anyway.....I was jus thinking, about the strange looks on guy's faces when they're absorbed in staring at us, and what goes through their heads......probably some jumbled up feelings that can't be articulated......thanks for your thoughts Ali......:)......glad I got so many responses to an age-old question......:)

I really like this. I just said to my friend today, "I hate the way men look at me." I like your spin on it, it makes me feel less icky.
