The knock at my door has
continued for hours
and still I have remained
with one foot almost firmly
set in front of the other
And yet, there is no sign
of this visitor who rocks
the peacefulness of my blinds
Causing them to flit open
and allow what light shines
outside to filter in
So that the dusty corners
and dirty baseboards that
lie undecorated are revealed
I’d rather welcome the frost
which seeps through the cracks
of my house instead of this caller
It has taught me stillness
hushed and cooled me, filled the
holes in the walls I have made
And masks the silences with
whooshes and whispers and
darting whistles that
bounce off the blank space
I fear the jiggling lock
will no longer hold
I am not ready to greet
this old friend who
I have chosen to forget
continued for hours

with one foot almost firmly
set in front of the other
And yet, there is no sign
of this visitor who rocks
the peacefulness of my blinds
Causing them to flit open

So that the dusty corners
