Why no Oscar nod for Ed?

edited February 2008 in The Porch
These songs are in no way as good as any Into The Wild Track. He got nominated for a golden Globe, and a Grammy but no golden statue. I don't get it. Not to mention that all the nominees preform their songs. It would have been great to see Ed on a stool with his guitar and his wonderful words.
Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...

Guaranteed was only played in its entirety over the ending credits of Into the Wild. The only time you hear it in the actual movie, it is just Eddie humming. The academy has a rule saying that the songs nominated must be played during the movie.

Doesn't the artist also have to fill out some form and send the clip in?

Is this true? Must be a new rule. I know that the Celine Dion song in "Titanic" was up for best song (probably won, I don't remember) and it didn't appear until the end credits.

I don't care. Three nominated songs from one movie? They couldn't have given one up for Ed? Ya ok, I get it was a musical (Enchanted), but come on!

I didn't know they had special rules. Doesn't surprise me though. The only reason i was watching is because i thought it was. When i didn't see any posts on here I went to the Oscar page and saw that is wasn't nominated I had to say my peace. He is a winner in my book. Sean Penn could have gotten a nomination for directing for sure. I am glad Enchanted didn't win. Those "Once" people seemed grateful. Good for them and the art on songwriting.

I was upset that Eddie wasn't represented. However, I'm psyched that of all the songs that were nominated, the best one actually won ("Falling Down" from Once). That's a very good song from a very good soundtrack -- and this has been a great year for soundtracks!
    Rock on!

I hate to admit it, but I know the Titanic song was played pretty much throughout the entire movie. It seemed as though every scene had it playing in some form in the background. In my defense, I haven't seen the movie since VHS.

Not the actual song, though. Rather segments based on that song (ie, the flute, the other woman singing who wasn't Celine Dion). Even so based on this, shouldn't Eddie's Guaranteed be up since he hummed part of it?
    Rock on!

I couldn't agree more. Wonderful song and a great back story.

It turned out exactly as I thought it would when the nominations first came out. The cheesey song vote got split three ways by the Enchanted nominees.

I would have been happy with either of the remaining two, but most happy with Falling Slowly.

Now, if Hal Holbrook could have only won. :(

Second that. Bardem's performance was overrated hype.

And Enchanted's "Happy Work Song" was just awful. Awful.

Would No More War be eligible for next years Oscars? I guess not since it's from a documentary.

Should have been the song to get the nomination. It was disqualified because f the very large, and not well thought out, break in the song.

They were probably afraid he would blow them off and wouldn't sing it on Oscar night. Would have been interesting. I think he would have shown up.

    What do y'all think?

P.S. I love that Soundtrack, but that song is not one of my Fav's on there.

I realize i'm in the minority around here.

It was deemed ineligible because the Academy felt he drew material for the soundtrack from previously recorded music. It was deemed to be not original for that reasons. Ed got shut out, as did Sean Penn, because the Academy is far too conservative for the likes of Ed. Could Ed have been trusted not to bash Bush if he won? Not a chance.
