Whispering, now this is beautiful.
Finishing page one, one hundred.
Pearl S. Buck, her The Good Earth.
I read it twenty years ago,
and in some seven chanced into
a first edition. It went into my storage.

My storage. Home to Widows and thier works.
Bicycles, never ridden in these blasted desert aires.
Magazines and moldy boxes. Gone now.
But the book, I am delighted, found.
It's cover half-way rotten,
spotted black. Tobacco colored,
all the pages stained.

I let it dry as best I could and
covered it, recalling tricks we used in high school.
Paper bags and scissors, only.
No tape or glue here necessary.
I used a bag from a small shop I got
last Christmas up in Littleton which held
pink tea sets for the girls.

I remember how it moved me then.
The story, at fifteen. Connecting with Wang Lung
and family in their early years.
The fruit and famine.
The honor, dedication.
Proud and full with love.

I remember also that I want too much.
And I remember to be grateful.

this is a rough, first draft. Some gentle nudges and if warranted, encouragement to make this better would be most appreciated. Perhaps, also... should the Book Club need a twist, maybe we can write poetry inspired from these readings? If we're driven to do so??? I should like to stick to classics, though. I've read and found inspiring The Celestine Prophecy, but... I need to be getting into Classical Literature before my eyes fail me and my breath at last escape <wink>. I've very little experience with it. I'm reading Desert Solitare, right now too... which a good story, written by a sometimes horrible writer, imo... anyways.... thanks for reading. I hope this book brings more writing, too. :) ciaocito ~Rachel

    hey, we're twins again!
    You ask me to enter
But then You make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
    To what You got
When all You've got is hurt
    ----
    Underneath this smile lies everything
All my hopes and anger, pride and shame
