the old woman's hair was softer than any silk
any love sheet buffer
and death's low hush in a black room

nine children slept around her on the floor
occasionally ingoring the deference they might show
ears pinned between their mother's fingers in a stuffy church

they loved her more than they liked their own
and wished her cupboard bare
