That Dakota without a Dakota below it.

One night,
when i was maybe 8
I saw the universe
for the first and only time.
It was South Dakota,
the outsides of somewhere
the southern edge of nowhere,
and not a manmade light
touched my adolescent eyes.

My father woke me out
of a comfortable dreams,
to see the sky, the stars
in its dormat beauty.
Uninterrupted.
It stood naked
farther than the Earth's July sky
dark and helpless.

Not knowing proper reactions
in the light of countless sources,
I put my hands in my pockets,
stood, staring
gazing
and watched.
But, there was no movement
no sound, no action.
I had never seen beauty
in such stillness,
nor this exhiliration
in stability.

The stars posed bright
dead for ages now,
and allowed me to focus in.
Making out each pore
of the blemised sky,
lost from the coverups
of city lights.

Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green
  • I read this yesterday, blueintheface but didn't have time comment---I think this is one hell of a fine piece! I really love it because one of my favorite things to do is escape the everyday and go far, far away from the city lights and lose myself in the stars. The Aurora Borealis is the most gorgeous sight I've ever seen (besides seeing some whales in the Gulf of the St. Lawrence--that was more amazing than I could ever find words to say) and your poem reminded me of that innocent peace and wonder you feel gazing up at the night's sky. Thank you so much!!! :)

Here's a cool pic of the Northern Lights, just cause. :)
