    Hmmmmm....

    Shakespeare's first 126 sonnets are addressed to a bloke and they're rather bittersweet; Sonnets 127-152 are not very complimentary to their subjects ("The dark lady" and Anne Hathaway); Sonnets 153-4 are a bit too classically allusive and aren't really Valentines' material. So, we'll skip Shakespeare.

    In fact, sonnets of the Renaissance period, prior to Shakespeare, are even less appropriate because they usually feature a first person narrator talking about their unrequited love for an unattainable young woman (represented in the third rather than second person). You want something directly expressive of your love...you could either have a go at rewriting some of the conventions of the sonnet form and theme by writing a direct, loving address to your girlfriend or you could actually be well served to consider looking at love poetry not in the sonnet format. Something personal to you both that communicates your love is what she'll appreciate more than writing down for her a poem that seems a little removed from your experience together.

    Hope I've helped.

    Percy Shelly...

    The fountains mingle with the river
    And the rivers with the ocean,
    The winds of Heaven mix for ever
    With a sweet emotion;
    Nothing in the world is single,
    All things by a law divine
    In one spirit meet and mingle -
    Why not I with thine?

    See the mountains kiss high Heaven
    And the waves clasp one another;
    No sister-flower would be forgiven
    If it disdained its brother;
    And the sunlight clasps the earth,
    And the moonbeams kiss the sea -
    What are all these kissings worth
    If thou kiss not me?
    It's all yellow.
