Still Life, With Cat
I am
fascinated—
by mangoes,
blue iris
and gladiola
blossoms in
the late
sun of
afternoon.
A worn
but polished
oaken table,
and cut
crystal vase.
Strawberries!
Apricots (from
Idaho) as
large as
softballs.
A bottle
Pinot Grigio,
two golden
rimmed wine
glasses—one
half full,
the other
half empty.
A bunch
of grapes
on the
cusp of
a Wedgewood
bowl, bunched
bananas arching,
draped over
two oranges
and a
grapefruit.
Two kiwi—
one peeled,
one not.
Sliced cantaloupe,
honeydews,
watermelon.
Stalks of
pussy willows,
and forsythia,
the lilac,
baby’s breath
happily smiling.
Apples—polished—
Macs, delicious,
golden, and
Granny Smith.
Three sprigs
of Queen
Anne’s cherries,
freshly washed.
Two tulips,
a whole
pineapple,
six roses,
in yellow
pink, reds.
A few
handfuls
assorted
mixed nuts
with shells.
On the
wall—a
portrait by
Renoir, and
a mirror.
Two 16
inch candles
in silver
holders, lit.
A ripe
plum, four
Alberta peaches,
callalilies,
one lemon,
one lime,
snapdragons,
bathed in
sunbeams,
and shadows,
en tableau.
A fat
tabby cat
sleeping on
an old
oak chair,
basking in
the sun.
Picture this—
calmly adding
details in
your mind.
Meditate on
this—it
will grow
on you.
