blood of six
billion ghosts,
bits of bone
and sinew gristle,
skull fragments,
reconstructed DNA,
cells divided,
skeletons crushed
to dust and stone,
consciences lost,
we climb on backs
of lost tribal
millions, billions
of ancestral spirits
passed before our
groveling self,
unlimited cries
for mercy from
deathbed dung heap
slums of European
Asias, death camps
in Siberia or
killing fields of
Kampuchea, machine
guns rattle roll,
the bones of students
in the ghettoes
of Warsaw, Prague,
Kent State,
or Guatemalan jungles,
death watch, the
plagues of
tribal genocide,
bomb blasts of Belfast,
rage of crack wars
Harlem or East L. A.,
death squads of
San Salvador, the
missing children of
Brazil, poison gas
pellets rain in Laos,
skulls used as bookends
in Milwaukee, Christians
slain by colosseum lions,
slaughtered Indians
on Trail of Tears,
Bataan Death March,
native peoples fallen
victim before plague

the skirmish fires
of war, or terror-
stalked victims in the night, all
blood on my hands,
that I may walk
these streets alive,
all bones of sentient
creatures sacrificed
for nothing, all skulls
crushed to fertilize
the living, all blood
spilled to consecrate
the hallowed ground
of battles won and lost,
all cells passed before,
the souls of tortured
trillions, yearning
for freedom, peace
from pain, and blood
on my hands, their
blood courses my veins,
commands my soul,
smears my page,
this bloodied stain,
and fuels my rage,
the senseless death,
the dying live
forever the printed page,
lest we forget,
our bloody land,
and age.
