Mark Tully is a multilingual "Anglo-Indian" correspondent (i.e., he descends from British "genteel colonialist" stock in India but as an empathetic person stayed close to people across sectarian, caste and ideological divides in a most unpatronising way - even in the view of Aijaz Ahmad, difficult to please - for these decades). He worked for the BBC World Service for decades, until he felt ousted by Foreign Office intervention. He then chose to work freelance.
