Circles

Is history a circle
a neverending line
of people parading thoughts
and ideas down the streets
lined with skyscrapers dwarfing
the pale winter evergreens that
once stood there

Are great leaders nothing more
than inflated ego’s that rose
above the cheering crowds of
laborers, sailing through the air
until their memorable smiles
fade into black and white newspaper
clippings, locked away in a
grandfather’s garage

Will the wars we fight break
noiselessly into the sands of
crumbled cities, with patriotism
rising and falling in the 5 faces
of the building moon

Or do we learn from this pendulum
which came so close to severing our
spines in blinding nuclear flashes
so we can tell each new year’s child
that the tick or tape of it is simply
not to grip these larger than life
hero’s too tight in our open eyes
because they are simply characters in
this poorly written drama, some just
have better stage presence
