What will come?
Of the cities once the exodus has begun
fluorescent lights humming mechanically
lighting ghost department stores
consumers abandon their posts
while manikins retain what was once precious

What will come?
Of the forests after fires have burnt their children away
the tired giants left idle
nourishing only history
living out their days in the cold wind

What will come?
Of the parasites without any fresh bowels to inhabit
only skeletons etched in dust
fading flesh clinging to gold and diamonds
laughing at their digestive prisoners

What will come?
Of the idle ocean-goers
hulks and dreadnaughts left to rust
cargo’s left without destination
hauled endlessly on their salty terrain
kept company only by passing storms

What will come?
Of ignorance
petty hatreds buried in death
gorged and bloated by the ravages of war
Who will hate now?
Who will pass judgment on creativity?

What will come?
Of faith
when the believers have lost their way
soulless and sullen
no evidence beyond or behind
the day the gods died
