Night Lights

In the quiet of my backyard
a single light emerged in the foreground
bliking white
A firefly landed on my chair,
and the small light was suddenly a life
its movements less erratic
as it crawled from the plastic leg of the chair
to the outstretched palm of my hand
and the light,
the life held closer to my face
was green
it blinked purposefully now
to a hidden metronome inside the creature
somewhere in the labyrinth of its anatomy

When it left my palm to join the gathering
specks of light in the dark weeds
all semblance of this orchestration disappeared
into a cascade of flickering color
like a basement of dying bulbs in a power outage
I looked into the field of light quite beyond my reach
to see the bugs mechanical counterpart
the underside of a boewing jet
blinking in the night sky
those passenger night flights departing from stewart airport
red and white lights flying along deliberate paths
their line crooked
only in comparison with the fixed stars scattered across
that swathe of sky
but these stars only flicker because their constant beams
are tugged by millions of fields of gravity
before being inhaled by my eyes
and the fireflies swimming circles in the blackness of the
grass and weeds teach their own lessons in the night
that permanence is simply a matter of perspective

UP upon the rise of a shallow Eastern valley under a dark, moon-free sky, back lit with a star-blanket one billion miles wide, the meadow breathes, sheltered on three sides by Maple, Oak, and Kentucy Tea. My old friend and I lie
    on the wet grass,
smoking pot and laughing at the other’s rendition of our credo… a swarthy “Lightnin’ Buuuuuuuug” spoken with just the right amount of sigh.

    My friend is gone.
    These memories are mine.
