extremely tentative, just notes on the train right now

City Life

A crowd of strangers carry me
up subway stairs
with the hurry of their faces
and the brush of their jackets
against my arms

People flow out of that tunnel
likes beads of sweat
tracing lines of perspiration down side streets

The city breathes white smoke from the sewer caps downtown
and it screams bullet holes into the walls on the east side

Those round cabs dart through the city like hemoglobin,
transporting people by the shortest possible routes,
unceremoniously to the site of a new infectious performance
