He'd gone to Paris to find her
He took a train to Bruxelles to meet her there
She sailed over seas across the Atlantic
And find her place in New York
They told him she'd gone to London
But he knew her heart was becoming
And desparation was his folly
In Milan, in Moscow, in Tokyo and in Rome
He wrote to her from Sydney
Somewhere in the Phillipines, maybe
He thought
She couldn't be in America
The place she dreads
The place of lonely hearts
And houses with screendoors
Islands were never her taste
Only the secluded ones
Only with natives
And none with tourists
In Sao Paulo
In Lima
In Cairo
All around the world he traveled
Till his last day
But New York was another lifetime away
This isn't the land of opportunity, it's the land of competition.
