I wouldn't argue with an anti Wasteland point of view, but I find this
work haunting and beautiful. I've read it more times than I can count,
and I still don't feel like I understand alot of it. I studied it in college and
didn't like it until years later. If I remember correctly, Ezra Pound served
mostly as an editor, who Eliot thanks in the beginning, calling him
    "the better craftsman."

Try reading it on several cups of coffee or an ephedrene tablet, or even
Coke(not "a-cola.") Read it out loud. Read it on the first day of April, the
middle of the Summer, and the dead of Winter....

  • I was only teasing, Proteus...

I've written long papers on Eliot; I've studied Eliot so much and "The Waste Land" in particular, over and over since about 1990, that I was really only taking the piss out of myself for being a self-proclaimed expert!

    "hypocrite lecteur".....c'est moi!

Okey Doke. I'm pretty new on this poetry & art forum. Eliot's my favorite
poet. Just don't eat too many peaches.

ah, but when the mermaids start asinging
don't be surprised that it's for you
    and one day,

    if come and stay awhile
    talking their reddish seaweed
    dreams, delving
into Titian or some artist new

and into the drizzled night of cats
    more orange misted then
    the smoke that purrs
    up star-sleeked alleyways

    yes there will be time
    and time again
    for tantalizing indecisions

    grand presumptions and
    revisions

    a time for polishing claws
    and old-dog tricks

    the flickering crises
    while taking your jam--

do you dare, do you dare
    when even the hesitations
    are desire

    taste the apricot slowly

we have lingered with the jammers of the sea-
ttle, pearl-glad symphonies reefed with trees
    ...
til Eddie's voice wakes us, and we (verb of choice)

    A-pearl is the coolest someth
  • Orange is the brightest colour, mixing
carrots fresh from the wild mind, mixing
    Mashed potatos and desire, stirring
    Broccolli shoots with pepper rain.
    Merlot kept us warm, covering
    Nights in forgetful glows, feeding
A lot of life to the Pearl Jam message pit....

  • If anybody asks you where I'm gone
That they don't see me quite as much these days
Just say a woman dancing in the sun
Makes my loose words and finger tapestries

And I'm just wishing for a merchant ivory smile
I'm just living for a merchant ivory smile

She paints a Turkish king and spider queen
She paints a palace bird that flies outside
She paints a night of sleepy bottle green
She paints a dance of angels in the shade

And I'm here dreaming of a merchant ivory smile
I'm here learning from a merchant ivory smile

    (Covespool waters web me
    Lead me to her call
    If I had ten beginnings
I'd choose this one from all.....)

She's like someone who lived here long ago
She's like someone you'd think had never been
She lets me count the colours I've to know
She lets me see the magic that she's seen

    And I'm here living
    for a merchant ivory smile
    I'm here living
    for a merchant ivory smile
    I'm just wishing
    for a merchant ivory smile
    I'm existing
    for a merchant ivory smile.
