Yeah...and they chose the perfect picture too.

That VH1 Rock Honors performance should have been all the evidence needed to justify Eddie's place on that list.

That was one of the greatest vocal performances I've seen from Eddie; or anyone in a long long time.

It was great to see Lanegan, Michael Stipe, and Joey Rammone get the nod as well.

  • word! way to go readers. if it wasn't for the political coverage, that publication would be totally worthless.

I wouldn't go that far. But it is insane that he wasn't even included in the top 100. I'm no partisan that thinks Pearl Jam should be number one on every list, but the man has one of the most distinctive and imitated voices in rock history, there's no way he can credibly be excluded from any list of top rock singers.

i think the idea is they asked the readers who they think should have been on there that was left out. regardless, he obviously deserves to be on there more than plenty of the ones RS chose
    5 years of Jam...

    07: Lollapalooza
    08: Bonnaroo, DC

    that's more like it!
  • i never read the first list, and im surprised at the amount of talent on this list that didnt make the first one. it's awesome that ed was #1 and that joe strummer was on the list, too.

seems way less self-consciously hip than the first RS list. and that's always a good thing.

Any list without Vedder, Cornell, & MJK isn't worth reading, anyway.

At least Cobain made it. /sarcasm
    Pittsburgh 6/23/06
    Madison Square Garden 6/25/08
  • Some of the comments are kinda funny in there. One guy is talking about RS bias against Paul Stanley and KISS.

I mean, hell...if Ed can't make the list why would Paul Freaking Stanley?

    i like that list better.

Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.

that's because you never see them No. 1 on any list and for once, here you do (if you see Eddie as being Pearl Jam). Whatever, it's nice to see him right up there, and Cornell No. 2, good call.
  • Am I crazy, or is this what always happens when experts make lists of this kind of thing? Pearl Jam gets no mention (and, in general, things are heavily biased toward older music), then there's a poll and they come out damn near #1. It's funny, too, because it's not like PJ is the flavor of the month or low-brow or anything. Usually I think of music as falling along a snobby-to-stupid continuum, but PJ have all of the attributes of a band the critics should love (integrity, intelligence, talent, influence) and still get overlooked. Then, despite that, they get huge props from the masses. Almost like getting props from the masses actually counts against you with (most of) the critics.

I must admit, I'm a RS subscriber and generally enjoy reading it for entertainment (read: don't always agree/disagree with what the various authors have to say). BUT, I do know that they have VERY distinguished writers that have been around the biz for a long time, and in GENERAL I think they do a good job - God knows you can't please everyone and suit everyones tastes...you know what I'm sayin'

Eddie SHOULD have been on the list though...imo
  • few questions. was voting done online? if it was.......was there a link posted here? if it was.......were people allowed to vote multiple times? if they were........then i think i know why eddie is at the top of that list.

  • like others here, i never read the first list, but i heard about a few names left off, as well as who's #1 (Aretha Franklin - absolute bullshit). this list seems much more accurate to my particularities. dig it.
  • Rolling Stone continues their streak of idiocy by including Axl Fucking Rose, Steven Tyler, and leaving Eddie off the list...http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/24161972/page/103

  • No shit. I was amazed ed was left off this list. It seriously made me question the validity of Rolling Stone. I know a lot of us already were skeptical, but this was an unforgivable omission. Did you see some of the jokers that made it instead of ed?

How ed and cornell didn't make the list is laughable.

Honorable mention goes to Dan Auerbach of the Blcak Keys. His voice fits the key's music perfectly and is a direct line to their old school blues influence. Just my two cents.

I'm surprised Jann let them put up this list....Peter Gabriel's on it.

  • Can't believe Ed and Chris Cornell did not make the first list...
