I could have posted this on Other Music but I would have done a disservice to the depth and breadth of this man's talent. He was an artist, singer-songwriter (and not of the introspective kind), great performer, novelist, poet, playwright, occasional actor and all-round creative force of such magnitude that even though he was more anti-star than anyone else in the business, he could have been bigger than anyone if he'd liked. When Jim Morrison died, The Doors immediately got their producer to ask him to replace the Lizard King. Coyne turned them down. His response was that he didn't fancy wearing the leather trousers. Plus, he said, his worst nightmare was living in a house full of gold records. Plus, he said they were crap! :D

I got to see him live in the early 1990s, in the north of England. He was over from Germany. Wow, what a voice. I never heard one like it. And I was very sad when he died last year. The man was the first punk, and maybe the best.

Here's his homepage. Check him out: he's long due for a reappraisal.
