The Beach

(This is what happened...
I jump in my car
White box,almost overheating
"Don't go on me"
should be playing in the background.
I jump on Hand Avenue
smoking the whole way
and I cross over the Parkway
on my way to Stone Harbor.
Passing the bar,passing the pizza dock,
passing the 5 & dime,passing city hall,
I make a right.
On my way down Dune Drive
into the parking lot of
my favorite beach spot.)
The Beach
Bodies lay languid,
brains dormant,
without a thought
except to
soak up the sun
read a book
catch a wave
throw a frisbee
swim in the ocean.
A plane goes by-
you know-
the ones with
the signs on the back of them
"Play the Lotto"
It flaps and flies in the wind.
Children building sandcastles
with toys
their parents can't put together
and
Parents with umbrellas-
their children can't sit still underneath of them.
A young couple walks by
holding hands
while
another couple is
sensually applying sunscreen
to his darlings back.
The jellyfish are miles away,
the starfish-
clinging to a rock,
and I,
am just
laid out,
watching it all pass by.
God,
I love the beach.
