Emma, I adore my ukulele. It is so much fun. I always wanted play a guitar, but I am short and was never able to play the chords very well. This is so much easier for me. Did you get the EV Ukulele songbook way back when? I missed out, but I did get the vinyl Ukulele Songs, which I think has quite a bit of the same material in 2 booklets, but also has a fold out uke chord chart, which is helpful. You can actually play Rise on the uke - not quite the mandolin but close and only three chords. The magic is in the strumming. Good luck on the lessons! :thumbup: :thumbup: :-D
It's a lovely little instrument ...I've always wanted to learn how to play an instrument, but never tried. I work with young children, so ideally i'd like to be able to play some simple songs for them on the ukulele. Last year I took it in to play for a group of 2 year olds and their reaction to my dreadful playing was so gorgeous. They started clapping and saying "yay...more" then I had song requests from them.
If I can learn to play the damn thing, I would love to treat myself to an Earnest uke (like the one Ed has) one day, but that is my dream.
My older brother has played the guitar for years, so the lucky bastard can just pick up my uke and play it beautifully. I will see how I go with the class, it is a small group class, so I hope it is alright. I haven't got Ed's songbook...I wish I did! I have the ukulele for dummies book, but have only read the start of it and I have an absolute beginners book by Steven Sproat. I've also ordered myself a couple of hand exercisers to try and strengthen my fingers. Are there any accessories/books that you'd recommend in particular when learning the uke?

Ooh I love the mother of pearl. I have to say, telling on myself, that I fell in love with my uke first from its looks before its voice. The words laser-cut into the uke say peace in different languages. So for a serious musician it's may not be the best, but I smile whenever I see it.
As far as accessories, my favorite is my tuner. If you don't have one, I recommend it. So much easier than trying to do it by hand or ear, and it lets you just play that much faster. And I just bought a new book, The Daily Ukulele by Liz and Jim Beloff. I believe that Ed had a reference to Jim in the Sniper for the fall shows. There are 365 songs in the book with the melody, so if you don't know it you can pick it out on the piano. And there is a whole section of kids songs, about 30 of them. Some of the songs are very simple, with just a few chords and others are more complex. I found my on Amazon for $20 and change.
