Funerals

I've experienced death again
This time
In a timely funeral procession
Preceded by a viewing
And those little cards you receive
With prayers on them
And pictures of Jesus on the front
Church and Steeple
Incense and Holy Water
With the elders
Now sitting in metal chairs
At the cemetary
And those luncheons afterwards
That I never can seem to figure out....

A whisper and a chill

"Why do I bother?"
The 11th Commandment.
"Whatever"

  • I'll drink to that
It doesnt hurt.... when I bleed
    but memories...they eat me
    I've seen it all before,...
bring it on cause I'm no victim.

  • When Johnny died, we said we didn't know him
Was he Offaly or Leitrim, Louth or Meath?
A quiet man. Pat had the flat below him,
so we thought it opportune to send a wreath
and do the funeral, then try some boozin'.
Pat thought he didn't drink, but Jaze, why worry?
We'd mourn him with respectable carousin'!
We'd sing in tune! Sure, why should we be sorry
to send the fecker off in jolly fashion?
So we wet his coffin lid with Guinness kisses
and hit the Dog and Duck with lovers' passion
for pints and drams and liquid gold caresses
from glasses, broad and warm, until we staggered.
Sure, death's a great excuse to go get laggered!

Why exactly was it we gathered
    On a crest without tears
    So close to the road
We could feel wind made by cars?

    And in the coffin
    I felt no pain
    or my spirit was released
    and my soul rendered.....

Take One Home for the Kiddies

On shallow straw, in shadeless grass,
Huddled by empty bowls, they sleep:
No dark, no dam, no earth, no grass--
Mam, get us one of them to keep.

    Living toys are something novel,
But it soon wears off somehow.
Fetch the shoebox, fetch the shovel--
    Mam, we're playing funerals now.
