walking along the riverbank
couldnt quite believe what i saw
two men and a pretty girl
bet you cant guess what was going on
no they weren't a-kissing
and no they weren't a-hugging
one had her by her delicate ankles
the other his arms wrapped round her chest
a tattoo encircled her right wrist
i saw it when they dumped her body
wrapped her deep in reeds and fetid water
where the river got caught and flowed slowly
i turned and walked away fast
there was nothing i could have done for her
thats what i told the policeman who first heard my story
asked me if i'd been drinking and i had to admit that i had
but still that doesnt explain a dead girl in the river
later as i stood hugging my coat to my body
shivering from the light rain and the knowledge of a dead girl
he leant close to me and apologised
i said i couldnt quite believe what i saw
he told me i had and she was deader than dead
days went by before that girl's family were found
her funeral a media circus on the edge of a country town
you know they never did catch those murdering bastards
and sometimes i still search for their faces
and i sometimes hope i dont ever see them
but then i think of that girl and know it couldve been me
and i never walk along that riverbank alone, not anymore.
hear my name
take a good look
this could be the day
hold my hand
lie beside me
i just need to say
