just another thought

slowly surely floating
out to sea
watching quietly as the figure
onshore disappears from sight
the wind picks up
drags me away from nothing
that could ever have been
the gulls glide high above
keeping pace with my increasing retreat
the moon rising sets a river of silver
against the rhythm of time
to follow until its end is reached
and all the memories fade to black
as my heart shrinks in defeat.

i turn my back and face a dawn
that rises with infinite promise
a little piece just a little piece
of a past so thoroughly worn

i smile to myself and know
my life's become my own
and everything that's possible
can only be gotten by me alone

i set my bearings straight ahead
but know detours will occur
i'll cast aside all lingering doubts
and no longer will be so easily led
hear my name
take a good look
this could be the day
hold my hand
lie beside me
i just need to say
