the smell of salty sea
and sunburnt seaweed
my skin warms and glistens
in the mid afternoon sun
i watch as the traffic flows
across the bridge from the mainland
like blood along an umbilicus
a pelican soars on updrafts
and finds purchase upon a streetlamp
my daughter calls my name
but by the time i look up
i am already forgotten
she fills her bucket with water
to fill her sandcastle's moat
a leaf cartwheels from a nearby tree
and lands above the waterline
my forearms an unhealthy tan
several shades darker than the rest of my body
i think back to when
it was i was last tanless
i figure it was
the night i was born.
hear my name
take a good look
this could be the day
hold my hand
lie beside me
i just need to say

    beautiful. you've outdone yourself, cate.
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green
