you've been gone so long
it's hard for me to remember your face
those crystal blue eyes
and that sly knowing smile
that lit up the room
hiding something deeper behind
you never talked that much
but when you did it broke my heart
i never knew someone so sad
who wanted to live life so much
you swore you wouldn't let it get to you
you promised you'd die an old man
before you let it kill you
the day i heard the news
i shouldn't have been so surprised
i put my hand to my heart
to stop it breaking out
i guess you didn't swear enough
cause as i stood beside your open grave
the rain fell, hiding
the tears i swore i wouldn't shed
i guess it's harder than we think
to stick to words we swear to
or keep promises we pin our hopes upon
you've been gone so long
the memory of your face has almost gone.
