i look out the kitchen window
a leaden sky
flock of homing pigeons
wing it on their elliptical flight
past gum trees
over houses and garage roofs
i think of her
the last time i saw her
her hand on my pregnant belly
my in utero son kicked
she smiled
said no one's babies ever kick for her
she'd so understand if she could
see that baby now
he was born a couple of months later
and hasn't stopped since
my eyes fill with tears
i can feel my heart
a little heavier
a smile bittersweet
i shake the memory from my mind
hear my name
take a good look
this could be the day
hold my hand
lie beside me
i just need to say
