'somebody's here,'
he said,
'i have to go.'
and you know what?
less than a week
later he was.
hear my name
take a good look
this could be the day
hold my hand
lie beside me
i just need to say

    he was gone
    and no one ever
    heard his laugh or
    felt him breathe again.
    his body reappeared
    the day we left town

    when the news got out
    there was disbelief
    and questions
    was it an accident?
    did he mean for it to happen?
    now that he's gone
    there's no one to ask

    all from afar
    the grief etched
    on their faces
    obvious, in the way
    their bodies slouched
    now he'd live forever.
