heart shaped box

the note said:
'do not open until christmas'
but she couldn't help herself.
patience was not her thing.
she slid the knife along the edge
and popped the wrapping open.
she opened the lid and gazed within
the sight she beheld was so mesmerising
she forgot where she was.
reaching in she held it in her hand
she lifted it out and raised it to her lips
she tasted its essence.
it gave off a heady aroma and she breathed
deeply, taking it within herself.
there was a knock on the door and her mother's voice
she called out that she'd be right there
she listened as footsteps trailed down the hall
one more time she touched the precious thing to her lips
she closed her eyes and smiled to no one
placing it back in its resting place she slid the box under her bed
it would be there when she returned.
hear my name
take a good look
this could be the day
hold my hand
lie beside me
i just need to say
