when sunday came around
the horror filled her whole being
every week the game was played out
her father insistant
her mother aquiescent
and her not wanting to be near either of them
but still she follows
for not to, would unleash the wrath of God
or so he tells her
she never knew that the Almighty
could hit so hard with a hand full of gold
nor leave an ache that wounded her soul.
she sits there between them and curses
their very existence and sometimes hers
to find God is to be free she's told
but free from what she wonders
she listens to the pretty songs
and watches with quiet eyes
she knows it all and yet
she believes none of it.
hear my name
take a good look
this could be the day
hold my hand
lie beside me
i just need to say
